CMOS technologies account for almost 90% of all integrated circuits (ICs). This book provides an essential introduction to nanometer CMOS ICs. The contents of this book are based upon several previous publications and editions entitled ‘MOS ICs’ and ‘Deep-Submicron CMOS ICs’ published by VCH (Weinheim) and Kluwer Academic Publishers (Boston), respectively.
Content
This book is fully updated and is not just a copy-and-paste of previous material. It includes aspects of scaling up to and beyond 32nm CMOS technologies and designs. It clearly describes the fundamental CMOS operating principles and presents substantial insight into the various aspects of design implementation and application. In contrast to other works on this topic, this book explores all associated disciplines of nanometer CMOS ICs, including physics, technology, design, memories, VLSI, power consumption, variability, reliability and signal integrity, testing, yield, failure analysis, packaging, scaling trends and roadblocks. Finally it also includes extensive discussions on the trends and challenges for further scaling. The text is based upon in-house Philips and NXP Semiconductors courseware, which, to date, has been completed by more than 3000 engineers working in a large variety of related disciplines: architecture, design, test, process, packaging, failure analysis and software. Carefully structured and enriched by in-depth exercises, hundreds of colour figures and photographs and many references, the book is well-suited for the purpose of self-study.
Author
Harry Veendrick joined Philips Research Laboratories, in 1977, where he has been involved in the design of memories, gate arrays and complex video-signal processors. His principle research interests include the design of low-power and high-speed complex digital CMOS circuits, with an emphasis on nanometer-scale physical effects and scaling aspects. Complementary to this is his interest in IC technology. In 2002 he received the PhD degree in electronic engineering from the Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He is a Research Fellow at NXP Semiconductors. He (co-) authors many patents and publications on robust, high-performance and low-power CMOS IC design and has contributed to many conferences and workshops, as reviewer, speaker, invited speaker, panellist, organizer, guest editor and program committee member. In addition, he is the author of MOS ICs (VCH 1992), Deep-Submicron CMOS ICs (Kluwer Academic Publishers: 1-st (1998) and 2-nd edition 2000). He is a co-author of Low-Power Electronics Design (CRC Press, 2004).
